Windowed Mode for DAoC? from Mark Jacobs 2002-12-16 14:42:19 Mythic has always been a company that listens to its customers and we will always continue to do so. Continuing in that tradition we present the community with the following update. Cheating in online games, whether they are MMORPGs or not, is one of the scourges of the industry. Nothing can ruin one player's experience in a game faster than another player who cheats to the detriment of the honest player. We have always been strongly opposed to any program that benefits one player at expense of another player (or to the game itself). That is why we have always vigorously enforced our EUALA including its prohibitions of add-on programs. That is why we have banned players who cheat through any means. As part of this effort we have not allowed a “windowed mode” of DAoC to be used by the players with our consent. As a result of all these actions DAoC has seen very little in terms of cheating by the players and our players have benefited greatly by these efforts. Even before we launched DAoC many of our players asked us to allow a windowed mode for DAoC. The reasons were of course varied, and many of them were compelling. However, they were not compelling enough for us to officially activate that mode. As DAoC has evolved and grown over the past year, the requests for this mode by players have increased, not decreased, over time. Once again, the players are putting forward compelling reasons, and once again we are faced with a tough decision. This time however we might be willing to take a chance where we weren’t before. With a fully trained CSR staff and anti-cheating methods that have been expanded and refined over the year, we are willing to listen very carefully to the DAoC community on this issue. If the majority of our community feels strongly enough to let us know that it favors having the ability to run DAoC in a windowed mode, we will enable it for DAoC. This change will also allow people who are running DAoC full screen to alt-tab and DAoC will be properly minimized to the taskbar. There are, of course, a few caveats here. First, we are putting up a test version of the SI client with windowed mode enabled this week. During this time we hope that the community will help us test the impact of this feature on Pendragon. Second, windowed mode will, at first, only be able to be run on the SI client. Like many other graphic features available only in SI, having a stable windowed mode works under DX8+ and the latest version of the game’s rendering engine. If the decision is made to enable windowed mode for the LIVE game, we will then work towards having a windowed mode available for some machine/card combinations for the classic client. Unfortunately, our tests so far indicate that many machine/card combinations do not work as well in windowed mode for the classic client as they do for the new client. Third, even if windowed mode is enabled, Mythic will continue its aggressive policy against players who cheat and third-party programs that allow players to do so will still be prohibited. We will continue to enforce the current Rules of Conduct just as we did yesterday and are doing today. Our strong stance against cheating will not change, now or in the future. Finally, we need to be clear that this is only a test of having a windowed mode for DAoC. This is an opportunity for the community to speak its voice clearly on this issue. Please use the usual feedback mechanisms (even posting on some sites if you wish) to let us know what you think of this possible change. Mark
